You must do this to protect your camera and memory card from damage. If you dont, it could corrupt your files or forever ruin your photos. Some digital cameras allow changing of memory cards as long as it is not in the middle of an operation. But its better to be cautious.

5. Stay away from water.
Ensure that the storage area of your memory cards or sticks and other camera accessories is completely weatherproof. Water could ruin your files in your memory card or it could do damage to the card itself.
