Many lenses have an IR mark. You can focus under visible light, Attach your filter and then defocus to the IR marking. If your focus is set for 15 meters, Tou would defocus until the 15 is alighed with the IR marker.

@oxwick It doesn’t matter, because you can just adjust it afterward anyway when you shoot in RAW.

Certainly not Gavin here… I’m AndrĂ©s. From my own experience, it is always advisable to adjust the white balance when you’re doing IR or any filtered picture. I am using a 450D with a Marumi filter (I’m not cheap, but I can’t afford anything better). With some workaround you’ll get very good results. Feel free to share or ask :)

Hi Gavin, great video, one question – do you re-set white balance or leave it on auto?

Hello Gavin,I love your vids and im new to infrared photography, i bought a IR 950 Filter, to use on my fujifilm finepix fd6500, and i use the same setings you use on your video, but i cant get a good result, i always get and hexagon of light or extreme brightness on the center of the photo, and the picture gets very bad definition. Also, my pictures turn out rather purple than red actually. So i was hoping for some advice from you. Can you help me somehow? Congrats on your work :)

i have been looking into IR photography….i have a canon 50D, would it be enough to buy an IR filter for my lens to get similar results instead of getting a fully dedicated IR camera?

it’s also worth noting that newer cameras are less sensitive to IR light (because of a stronger in-built filter) and so longer exposures are needed
