The x1s got about 8.5 stops of range, very shallow compared to dslrs. However, it provides exceptional raw files and you can recover up to 11 stops… the $900 panasonic GF1 has about the same range, but when you try and recover you only get 9-9.5 stops at most.

And in doing so, you’ve completely missed the point of a Leica. DSLRs will do for the vast majority of people. However, some people will shell out for handmade, mechanical perfection…

Lica M lenses are top of the range, even better than canon/nikon. Sooo… the X1 could have been one mean pocket camera selling hundreds of thousands… it will not happen, too slow….

sorry but leicas legendary name comes from their glass and their m series cameras which are still as good as they have ever been if not better. their new larger than 35mm format slr is also getting shining reviews.

This is a p&s camera i cant imagine it being good because of the limitations of p&s …however i can probably say that this is better than most other p&s

    peace

Who cares about the LCD? The sensor is 23.6 x 15.8 mm with 12 million pixels–huge for a compact camera.

There are issues with the X1 but the LCD is just a silly one. It’s a viewfinder, nothing more.

Very unfortunately, the Leica products, including the X1, rely almost entirely on the legendary Leica name, rather than on true measures of performance and value, to sell. The fact that this $2000 point-and-shoot, albeit beautiful, features only a 230k 2.7″ LCD, very sluggish AF, and no weather sealing, supports the fact that Leica is selling mystique, not value. Sadly, the X1 is not the ultimate rugged decisive moment camera so many of us are waiting for.

No, it’s CONSTRUCTED in Japan, and ASSEMBLED in GERMANY. United States regulation requires the company to say where the final assembly took place. That’s why it says “Made in Germany”

    Leica design their cameras right.

If I ever switch from my basic all manual 35mm camer to digital I will go to a Leica…prolly this cause the M series are over my budget haha.

Was just looking at some pics taken by it and it struck me that all of them had blown highlights? Hopefully it was poor reproduction rather than the camera… So how much is this thing?

i wonder why the german-based leica brand is so expensive. i’d rather get a nikon dslr…

Good video with a clear explanation of features. It appears that Leica is perfecting the P&S and I like it!

The bigger the sensor is the better Dynamic Range & IQ in the poor lighting condition.

Looks a little fat to “slip in your pocket.”

over 1000 for small camera seems too expensive but i like its classic design with outstanding performance! Go Leica

Well if you’d just want to buy a smaller Leica, what about the D-Lux 4, it is smaller, cheaper AND has a great Lens (2.5x-Zoom, 24mm and F2.0 ). The only difference is the sensor I guess?

would have been great to have manual focus on the lens with a ring.

    Thank you.
